The Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre generally consists of a 40,000sf multi-purpose recreation facility. This new state of the art facility is home to the St. John’s Swilers Rugby Club.

The structure generally consists of a Pre-Fabricated Steel Building supported by a suspended cast-in-place structural concrete slab. The concrete slab is supported in turn by a series of cast-in-place concrete grade beams, pile caps and steel piles.

This project also included an extension to the Swilers Clubhouse. This generally consisted of a wood framed structure supported by a suspended structural concrete slab. The concrete slab is supported in turn by a series of cast-in-place concrete grade beams, pile caps and steel piles.

Scope of Services
DBA was the structural consultant for this Design-Bid-Build project. Our responsibilities included and the design of the sub-structure of the Swilers Sports Complex and associated extension to the Swilers Training Facility and Offices. Additionally, DBA complete Contract Administration during the construction.

Design Challenges
This Design-Bid-Build project presented many challenges at the foundation level. The building is constructed at a former landfill site with very poor soil conditions and environmental issues.

Solution; the foundation system consisted of piling through landfill into solid bedrock to avoid disturbing the potentially contaminated material.
